What Is a Sports Channel?

A sports channel is a television speciality channel that broadcasts sporting events, usually live, and when not broadcasting sporting events they often feature sports news and other related programming. It is often available via cable and satellite.

These channels usually televise games only in the region where they play, but can sometimes be viewed by people outside that area, if they subscribe to a package such as MLB TV or NFL Sunday Ticket. Many streaming services don’t carry regional sports networks, so diehard fans may save more money in the long run by signing up for a cable subscription with their favorite RSNs bundled with other channels they want to watch. However, a few services — including DirecTV Stream and Fubo — do carry some RSNs, so they could be a good option for sports-only viewers who don’t want to pay for cable.
